Trafalgar Square Statues

Trafalgar Square - completed in 1845 - architect - Charles Barry

Trafalgar Square is named after the battle of Traflgar (1805) a famous naval victory led by admiral Lord Nelson who died in the battle and whos statue towers over the Square.


Nelson's Column - 1843 - (statue by E. H. Baily)

The column is made of granite, the statue itself of Sandstone.

For photographers Nelson faces towards parliament which is to the South so, if you want Nelson in light and facing you, go South of the Square towards Whitehall.

This photo was taken at full zoom 200mm and a high shutter speed to stop camera shake. Through the zoom lens you can see he has just one arm.

These are the four bronze lion sculptures at the base of Nelson's column.

Difficult to photograph first because of the colour (not quite black), and (if you want only the lions), because of tourists climbing all over them for snaps.
